In its preliminary 2020 estimates, Digital Commerce 360 projects marketplace gross merchandise sales will grow 40% year over year, thanks to a surge in online shopping as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
Ecommerce vs. retail over the last decade
In 2007, ecommerce accounted for 5.1% of total retail purchases in the U.S. In 2019, as this infographic shows, ecommerce penetration neared 16.0%. Early Digital Commerce 360 estimates show online sales were a staggering 21.0% of total retail sales in 2020.
Amazon Prime Day 2020
Amazon sold $10.4 billion worth of goods on Prime Day, up 45.2% from $7.16 billion in 2019. Our data shows consumers purchased more holiday gifts this year than during past Prime Day events because of its proximity to the holiday season. European ecommerce
The Europe 500, a ranking of the largest online retailers in the region based on 2019 web sales, collectively sold $218.69 billion online last year, up 16.9% from $187.12 billion in 2018. Median web growth of the Europe 500 was 15.0%. These five charts show the top five European online retailers, fastest-growing retailers, fast-growing categories and cross-border data.
Small and medium-sized online retailers
The 2020 Digital Commerce 360 Next 1000 is a ranking of the 1,001–2,000 midsized online retailers selling in North America. Just shy of the Top 1000, these ecommerce merchants have annual online sales between $1 million and $29 million. Collectively, the Next 1000 sold $11.00 billion online in 2019, up 15.5% from $9.52 billion in 2018. The series of charts in this article shares data on the Next 1000 cohort.
