Amazon emphasizes omnichannel options and green shopping
Amazon supercharged its presence in the grocery market in 2017 when the online giant bought the Whole Foods Market chain. Whole Foods, which emphasizes organic food, sustainability and upscale products, appeals mainly to affluent consumers.
Digital Commerce 360 estimates Amazon’s online grocery sales grew 13% in 2021 and 109% since 2019. More recently, Amazon has been going after the mainstream grocery buyer by opening a chain of stores labeled Amazon Fresh. In the first quarter of 2022, Amazon opened eight new Amazon Fresh grocery stores and now has 46 Amazon Fresh grocery stores worldwide, including 26 in the United States.
