After doubling in 2020, online grocery sales kept growing in 2021.
U.S. online grocery sales hit $84.78 billion in 2021, up 16.5% from $72.79 billion in 2020, Digital Commerce 360 estimates. That growth rate was far less than the pandemic-driven 100% surge in 2020. But online grocery sales continued growing much faster than the overall grocery market.
Digital Commerce 360 estimates that combined grocery sales through all channels reached $1.345 trillion, up 4.8% from $1.284 trillion in 2020.
Ecommerce is now a well-entrenched part of the grocery business. While some shoppers might never order food and beverages online, others expect grocery retailers to offer omnichannel options — notably, curbside pickup and same-day delivery. In that way, grocery retail is becoming more like other retail categories.
