Digitally native brands outgrow rest of the pet care market

Digitally native, vertically integrated pet care brands in the Top 1000 and Next 1000 grew 34.1% in online sales in 2021, according to Digital Commerce 360 data. This outpaced all pet care retailers in the Top 2000, which collectivelygrew their online sales 20.2% in 2021.
At the top of this category is publicly treaded retailer Bark, ranked No. 190 in the Top 1000. Following Bark is The Farmer’s Dog Inc. (No. 962). PrettyLitter Inc. ranks No. 1,369, and Ollie Pet Inc. ranks No. 1,428.
These digitally native, vertically integrated brands, or DNVBs, account for four of the 35 pet care retailers in the Top 1000 and Next 1000. Collectively, these four DNVB pet care merchants grew 34.1% in 2021 and 51.4% in 2020.
Plus, pet care DNVBs continue to outpace the overall pet care category in the Top 1000 and Next 1000, according to Digital Commerce 360 projections. Those DNVBs are projected to grow online sales 13.5% in 2022, while the overall pet care category is projected to grow 12.0%.
