Walmart will hold its first Walmart+ Week beginning July 10, the retailer announced. The online sales event coincides with Amazon’s Prime Days, which were just confirmed for July 11 and 12.
The first 24 hours of Walmart’s sale will only be available to Walmart+ members, the retailer said. On July 11, the sale is open to anyone. Amazon Prime Day sales are only available to Prime members.
In previous years, other major ecommerce retailers held sales during Prime Day. However, Walmart did not hold a competing sale event in 2022.
Walmart vs. Amazon
Both retailers are major players in the U.S. ecommerce landscape.
Amazon is No. 1 in the Top 1000. The database is Digital Commerce 360’s ranking of the largest North American online retailers. Walmart ranks No. 2.
Amazon is also No. 3 in the Online Marketplaces database, which ranks the 100 largest global marketplaces. Walmart is No. 9 in that database.
Walmart launched its membership program in 2020 as a competitor to Amazon’s massive Prime membership. Amazon ended 2022 with 168 million subscribers. Walmart doesn’t share membership figures but told investors the program was growing in Q1, with nearly 50% of new members joining through pickup and delivery services. Members shop more frequently and spend more per trip, the company said.
Prime Days vs. Walmart+ Week
Both sales events will include products across several categories. Amazon says there will be deals on “popular brands like Lancôme, Kérastase, Peloton, Victoria’s Secret, YETI, The Drop, and Sony, and save on new Amazon-exclusive deals from D’Amelio Footwear, OPI, and Alo Yoga.” Walmart says customers will see deals on “thousands of popular products across electronics, home, toys, fashion and more.” Both retailers marketing materials’ include back-to-school items and appliances.
